Phallic Realms preview: Value of the Erection

Submitted by Jonathan Oliver

I feel compelled to share this given recent conversations on Monkey Brothers Playing  Revolution. I've shared some of this with Joaquin a while back, but now it's time to share with all of you. This is from a little project I've been working on called Phallic Realms.
To preface this a bit, the intent of Phallic Realms is to explore the source of masculine essence which is the phallus. Here is a quote from my work so far:
"What I propose here is a new conceptualization of the phallus and phallic. It is a transcendent/ metaphysical perspective. There is a reflexive dynamic between the physical origin and the metaphysical origin of the phallus.
The genetic expression of the phallus is the penis and it is from the penis that we most clearly see the essence of the phallic. The penis embodies this essence but it is not the source of the essence. Although the primary purpose of the penis is sexual intercourse, the primary purpose of the phallus is not sexual. The penis is the defining physical characteristic of the male. The penis is fundamental to maleness. In the same way, the phallus is fundamental to masculinity. The key to understanding masculinity is understanding the essence of the phallus. This begins with looking at the fundamental quality of the penis."
(segue to the Value of the Erection)

1st Value of the erection:

- masculine identity
The first value of the erection is identification with the masculine and all the possibilities and potential inherent with being masculine. The erection intrinsically links our physical being with the conceptual essence of masculinity, the phallus. It is connection with the power of the phallic essence. The phallus is the image of an erect penis. My erection is the embodiment of the phallus; the manifestation of the conceptual essence within me. It is the first and most basic physical expression of masculine essence. The penis makes me male. The erection is the sprouting of masculinity. This first value of the erection goes to explain why all erections are not erotically motivated. I believe this may be the root of homoeroticism. It also explains why erectile dysfunction is so disturbing and humiliating for men.

2nd value of the erection:

- male sensual pleasure
The second value of the erection is for male sensual pleasure. The erect penis is primed for sensual pleasure. All that is needed to produce sensual pleasure in the erect penis is gentle friction. This sensual pleasure can quickly and easily make the male a huge fan of his penis due to the immense pleasure and gratification provides. This is why masturbation is prevalent among adolescent males. It is a healthy expression and enjoyment of masculinity. “I am male. I am sprouting masculinity and this thing makes me feel really good.” This potential for pleasure is quite powerful. So much so that this value often overshadows the first value. This is true of westernized societies where an erection is always associated with sensual desire. This can lead to confusion and frustration in some males when sprouting an erection during non-sensual activity and especially in homophobic environments where one’s “sexual orientation” may come into question. Sensual pleasure is very important to masculinity but should not overshadow other aspects of masculinity. The power of sensual pleasure should be harnessed instead of exploited.

3rd Value of the erection:

- procreation
The third value of the erection is procreation. The erection allows the male to penetrate the vagina and deliver the life-making fluid that is semen. Children are the second out-flowing product of the penis. The first out-flowing is the ejaculate containing the sperm that fertilizes the ovum initiating conception. When the woman delivers the resultant child, that child is the second out-flowing from the male. For men in all societies, children are a source of pride and are evidence of virility. For this same reason, it can be troubling for a man who cannot conceive a child with his mate. His first instinct is to think that there is a problem with him. That he is not “man” enough. Modern medicine can usually find the reason behind infertility in couples and most men are greatly relieved if they learn that medically it is not their fault. The life-giving power of the erection should not be taken lightly. The responsibility of father-hood should be highly regarded. The potential for procreation should always be considered when mating. A man should not be careless and reckless with his seed when it comes to women. We must exercise wisdom to balance the 2nd Value and the 3rd Value so as to not exploit sexual pleasure.

4th Value of the erection:

- Shared sensual intimacy

The second value of the erection is for shared sensual intimacy. This is notable in sexual intimacy between male and female. The phallus physically stimulates the female genitalia to achieve mutual pleasure and intimate bonding when mating. This same pleasure and intimate bonding is achievable and desirable among men. This plays a role in exercising wisdom between the 2nd Value and the 3rd Value. Intimate physical bonding between men offers an alternative to promiscuous activity with women. The human creature was designed for intimacy with both sexes.

Male to male sensual intimacy is useful in building strong social bonds among men, while providing a much needed sensual release until the time for mating. After the time for mating, it continues to build the natural and desirable bonds among men to demonstrate their natural affection freely. Shared sensual intimacy is important between mating partners and buddies. With the female mate, it demonstrates devotion to care for her and your family. This devotion meets emotional needs for the woman. With buddies, it is a celebration of masculinity and a sharing of masculine resonant energy and meets emotional needs for both men.
